Denver Fire Scholarship

Deadline for the 2023 Scholarship Application is July 15, 2023

The Denver Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation and the Denver Fire Department Foundation in partnership with Burg Simpson, Philanthropy Experts, United Health Care, Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, and Nightingale Advantage are pleased to announce the 2023 Denver Fire Scholarship Program. We will award eight $1,500 scholarships to qualifying students who are the children of an active or retired Denver firefighter. This scholarship program grows out of our interest in giving back to the Denver Fire community.

PRIZES

Eight scholarships of $1,500 will be awarded to eight selected finalist and can be used in any way to help pay the cost of tuition, fees, books, meal plans or housing. An independent committee made up of members outside the fire service will make the final decision. All essays are reviewed anonymously and all identifying information is removed before reviewers receive the essays.

ELIGIBILITY

This competition is open to seniors in high school and older who are:

  • Currently in 12th grade and intend to enroll in an accredited 2 or 4-year technical college (trade school), college or university OR a student currently enrolled as an undergraduate in an accredited 2 or 4-year technical college (trade school), college or university
  • Has a parent that is an active or retired member of the Denver Fire Department
  • Past applicants are encouraged to re-apply, however, past winners of this scholarship are not eligible

Students will not be restricted as to the number or value of scholarships received from other sources to receive this award.

ESSAY TOPIC

The purpose of the essay is for the review committee to get an understanding of who you are, your goals for the future and what motivates you. Entrants must write an original essay of 750 words that answers the following topic.

  • “How has having a parent or step-parent in the fire service influenced you and impacted your life plans and goals?”

ESSAY REQUIREMENTS

Essays must be original work. Any sources used must be properly cited and included in Works Cited/ Bibliography. Essays cannot be more than 750 words. Citations and Bibliography are not included in the word count.

SELECTION DETAILS

The winners of the award will be notified on or before July 24, 2023. All essays submitted become the property of the Denver Fire Department Foundation and Denver Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation.

The winner will be selected by an independent selection committee. The decisions of the independent selection committee are final.

By entering the scholarship competition, winners agree to allow the Denver Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation, the Denver Fire Department Foundation, Burg Simpson, Philanthropy Experts, Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, and United Health Care the right to publish the entrant’s name, photograph, images and other information (including general location) for the purpose of publicity, promotion, and news (including use in broadcast media, printed publications, editorial and PR activities and online) about these scholarships.

Disbursement of this scholarship is awarded based upon proof of registration sent to the Denver Fire Scholarship committee. Scholarship monies will be distributed by August 15, 2023.

SUBMISSION DETAILS

Application submissions for the 2022 scholarship contest will be accepted starting May 15, 2023 ending July 15, 2023.
